How-to

Translate any text on your Mac
just by pointing at it

July 11, 20264 min read

No selecting, no copy-paste, no second tab open on Google Translate. Move your cursor over a foreign sentence — a WhatsApp message, an email, a paragraph on a website — and the translation appears right there. And it all happens on your Mac.

The old way to translate is slow

You hit a sentence in another language. So you select it, copy it, switch to a browser, open Google Translate, paste, read, switch back. Five steps and a lost train of thought — for one sentence. Do that twenty times while reading a thread and you've spent more time juggling tabs than actually reading.

There's a faster way that most people don't know exists on Mac: hover translation. You point, it translates. That's the whole interaction.

How hover-to-translate works (1 minute)

NeverTyping reads the text under your cursor and shows its translation in a small on-screen widget. Everything is translated on your Mac with Apple's on-device engine — nothing is copied and nothing is sent to the cloud.

  1. Install NeverTyping and grant Accessibility permission so it can read on-screen text.
  2. Turn on Instant Translate (hover) in settings and choose the language you read in.
  3. Point your cursor at any text — a chat message, an email, a headline.
  4. Read the translation in the widget. Move away and it disappears. That's it.

Why this is genuinely better

The same app also types for you

Hover translation is one half of NeverTyping. The other half is voice dictation: hold a key, speak, and your words are pasted wherever your cursor is — up to 4× faster than typing. So you can read incoming messages in your language and reply by voice, all without your hands leaving the flow. Reading a message in Spanish and answering in English becomes a two-second loop.

FAQ

Can I translate text on Mac without copying it?

Yes — point your cursor at the text and NeverTyping shows the translation in a small widget. No selecting, no copy-paste, no separate translate tab.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Translation runs on your Mac with Apple's on-device engine, so it works with no internet and your text never leaves your computer.

Which apps does it work in?
