How to dictate in Slack
on your Mac
If your work lives in Slack, you type a lot of little messages all day. Dictating them is faster, easier on your hands, and — because you stay in control of Enter — perfectly safe. Here's how.
Slack is death by a thousand messages
No single Slack message is long. It's the volume that wears you down — dozens of quick replies, status updates, "on it", "can you check this?". Each one is a small burst of typing, and they add up to a real chunk of your day (and your wrists). Dictation turns each of those bursts into a one-second spoken sentence.
How to dictate in Slack (2 minutes)
NeverTyping types wherever your cursor is, so it works in the Slack desktop app and Slack in a browser. Everything is transcribed on your Mac.
- Install NeverTyping and grant Accessibility permission.
- Click the Slack message box in any channel, thread or DM.
- Hold your dictation key — right mouse button by default (or F2, F3, Fn/🌐, right Option, a side mouse button) — and say your message.
- Release, then press Enter to send. The text lands in the box first, so you decide when it goes.
The "don't send it early" tip
People worry that voice tools will fire off a half-finished message. NeverTyping doesn't — it types the text into the box and stops there. You press Enter yourself. So you get the speed of voice without ever accidentally sending "um, so I was thinking—" to the whole channel. Read it, fix a word if you like, then send.
Nice for remote and async teams
- Faster standups and updates. Speak your update in one breath instead of typing it out.
- Kinder on your hands if you're messaging all day — a real relief if you deal with wrist strain.
- Multilingual teams: NeverTyping auto-detects 100 languages, so you can reply in French to one colleague and English to another without changing anything.
- Works in the search box and channel names too — anywhere you can type.
